Bhileag 9th January 2022

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord: today we conclude the Christmas season with the lovely Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. At all Masses this weekend water will be blessed and then the Holy water will be sprinkled on all in the church after the renewal of Baptismal promises. After the Mass the Holy Water will be left in the church porch and parishioners are welcome to fill any holy water bottles and then to sprinkle their own homes with the holy water for the New Year.

Crib Collection: today we will take up a second collection for the “crib collection”. Normally we would leave a basket beside the nativity scene of each church and for money to be left beside the crib but this year it will be best to take up a collection which then goes to the charity in the church called “The Holy Childhood”.

Funerals: we remember in our prayers the repose of the soul of Wilma Manford of Borve who passed away on Thursday 6th January in hospital in Glasgow. Wilma had not been keeping well for a while now and in the end Wilma needed that peace. We extend our prayers of love and sympathy to all Wilma’s family at this sad time. The funeral arrangements have still to be arranged and will be announced in due course. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen..

We also remember in our prayers the repose of the soul of Flora MacFarlane (Floraidh Carter of Brevig) who passed away recently in Oban. Her Funeral will take place in Oban.

We also pray for the repose of the soul of George Scaramangus of Grean who was laid to rest on the island on Thursday 6th January in Cuithir. George reached the wonderful age of 94. We extend our prayers and sympathy to Annag and all the relatives at this time.

Covid-19 guidelines:  Let us all continue to carry on the good work of keeping on top of Covid-19 by wearing our face masks- keep sanitising our hands-go for our vaccinations. We all have to play our important part on the island of keeping control of this virus.

Church Christmas decorations: The Castlebay Church decorations will be taken down today (Sunday) at 2.30pm and the church will also be cleaned and prepared for entering the ordinary time of the church year. If you can help pack away the decorations then please come along. Canon John Paul wishes to thank all who will give their time to pack away the decorations and nativity scenes of each of our churches for another year. Moran Taing!

Scottish Bishops postpone restoration of Sunday Mass obligation: The Catholic Bishops of Scotland announced on Thursday 23rd December “sadly there has been a serious worsening of the Covid situation and the restoration of the Sunday obligation will be postponed until a more favourable time. We ask everyone to continue to pray for a speedy end to the pandemic and for the good health of you and your loved ones in 2022”.
